About the event
For those meeting her for the first time: bell hooks (born Gloria Jean Watkins, 1952–2021, she wrote her name in lowercase, a quiet refusal of ego) was a Black feminist writer, cultural critic, and teacher who wrote nearly 40 books across her lifetime. She is perhaps best known for her writing on love - not love as sentiment or romance, but love as a daily practice, an ethic of care and responsibility, and a force capable of changing how we live with ourselves and one another. Alongside this, she wrote powerfully about race, gender, and class, and the ways these shape who gets to be heard, held, and free.
